So the Ottawa District School Board, in the throes of a major funding crisis is to vote on whether to try to merge with the Catholic board.
You can dress it up as a human rights issue, or pretend you're going to find efficiencies, but has anyone else noticed that it's never the well-run school boards with balanced budgets and good quality schools that want to merge with their counterparts?
Much like city amalgamation, you can bet that the Catholic board's robust finances and carefully managed budget would just disappear overnight.

Would all schools then offer religon? Thought not. This would be political suicide for any party that proposed it.
I've always wondered how the Catholics can take a school the public board throws away, spend 20% of what it costs to build a new one, and end up with a facility that lasts for years ...
Small wonder the public board has funding issues.
I Say merge the boards. It never should have been seperate anyway in my opinion. Merge them and then appoint the financilly responsible ones to run the show and let the rest of them know how it's done.

I say fund the student .... and let parents decide where to send their children. So long as the Provicial testing results are acceptable, why does it matter if a student attends a Public, Catholic or private school ?
Ah, parental choice. Strikes terror into the hearts of the teachers unions and their allies in government.
I'd like to see locally operated schools with their own governing body and the principal being given more freedom, with the school boards slimmed down to a strategic planning and capital expenditure only role. The schools operating budget would be funded direct from the province on a per student basis. Teachers should be provincial employees with no middleman - so any government that caves to teaching unions has to cough up the money themselves.
Interested groups could then build their own schools, or existing independent schools could opt-in to a state system. Catholic schools could keep their ethos and identity, but so could other groups.
Struggling schools can be helped by visiting management teams and turned around.
This has worked well in the UK, with many 'failing' schools being fixed, and many vocational or specialist schools being created.
