We are entering a major H1N1 event here in Eastern Ontario, if you look at the stats being put out by the local health units. And we have now two fatalities of 11 year old children.
Get the shot, people. Your moonbat junk science and reptilian shape-shifter conspiracy theories don't give you the right to put the rest of us at risk.

Not getting the vaccine is completely irresponsible. True, in most people the odds of dying from the flu are slim, but if you are the one infected and carrying it who infects someone else, whatever the reasons for their susceptibility, then you are should still guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
We succeeded in getting rid of polio and small pox by mass vaccination. We almost got rid of tuberculosis, and then we were a little careless about immigration and its coming back. we need that same public spirit around the flu, which is a major cause of death among our senior citizens.
I don't subscribe to the autism link hysteria or conspiracy theories, but reasonable people can come to the conlusion that the shot is at best not needed, and at worst an obscene over-reaction to a flu that is no worse than the regular seasonal flu that I don't get a shot for each year.
You are still more likely to die from the non-H1N1 flu that some people might not even get innoculated against because this is the one the media is hyping.
Adler, has an EXCELLENT segment on currently (1:05 Mtn)and the idiots that are fearmongering, should STOP!
The biggest whiners and complainers in the lines here in Calgary, are the very people that should be waiting and let the children go first. The SENIORS and HEALTHY!
Shame on them. There has been tons of info about this aspect but they just chose to ignore it and bitch!
If your kids get the shot, they will be immune theoretically and it won't matter what anyone else does. So get the shots If you want.
When I read: Don't Kill My Kids With Your Junk Science. I can't help but infer that you don't fully understand vaccinations yourself, nor am I struck with an overwhelming desire to care about you or your kids.
anony: To have a proper vaccination program, you need at least a 70% uptake rate or else it won't matter if people have had the vaccination or not, as the virus can mutate. if you don't get the vaccinationa nd get the flue and someone in your family dies, DON'T come bitching to me.

Thanks Maple, you answered that one before I could get to it. Wired recently carried this article about how childhood diseases are reaching pre-vaccination levels in some parts of the US due to the moonbat anti-vaccine crowd.

And further, to Anon: If you don't vaccinate your kids, you're inherently saying you don't care about anyone else or their kids. It's socially irresponsible in the extreme.
DPC, I love you. As a medical student, I am doing my best to educate others about the safety and efficacy of the vaccine, and I am so glad you made a post about this, and especially the point you raise about herd immunity - if you aren't vaccinated, you're a potential carrier and can cause others with compromised or immature immune systems to become very sick, or even die. Everyone: protect yourself - and others! Get yor H1N1 shot!
This is what concerns me about the flu shot.
Feds mum over legal protection for swine flu vaccine makers

If it is completly safe why do they need legal protection.
Excellent comment..It's sadly ironic that it may be the success of vaccinations over the last 40 years that has led to people becoming complacent and resistant...
To Clive, Mark, and everyone else that wants to push the vaccine on everyone:
If you're worried about getting the flu then get the vaccine yourself. People who decide not to get the vaccine are not killing anyone but themselves even under the most stretched of logic.
But lets be clear and honest about the facts here. Australia just went through their own flu season without any vaccination program for H1N1.
Did disaster strike? Were their hospitals overwhelmed with patients? Did everyone die? Nope. As I outline on my blog using stats taken straight from the Australian government even though confirmed cases of influenza were 8.4 times the 5 year average emergency room presentations and observed cases by GPs was similar to 2007.
Anonymous: the flu will mutate anyways regardless of what % uptake rate you have. Why do you think they don't run around every year insisting that absolutely everyone get vaccinated? In fact, as with cases of drug resistant strains of bacteria, its likely that too many drugs will only make more vaccine-resistant strains.
Ignatieff won't get the flu shot for himself so why should I? Ya, ya, he's encouraging other people to get it but reports are he has no plans on getting it himself.
Right on DarcyMeyers. I plan to get the vaccine. Some parents would prefer to play russian roulette with the life of their children. We live in a free country and that is their right. Just don't expect my taxes to pay your legal fees if you make the wrong choice.
Would this be an example of natural selection unfolding?

To correct an incorrect assertion I made:
"vaccine-resistant strains" implies that the virus will 'resist' treatment by the vaccine, when a vaccine is a preventative measure not like an antiviral treatment.
I should have said vaccine immune strains or something similar to imply that the vaccine won't work against it. (Just like happens every year with the seasonal flu)
